Area-Wide Integrated Management System

The recently approved technical cooperation project funded by the  Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United  Nations entitled "Assistance to manage Huanglongbing in Belize" will assist Belize in implementing  an Area-Wide Integrated Management System (AIMs) for the  Asian Citrus Psyllid in Belize. This initiative is coordinated through the research arm of the Citrus Growers Association (CGA), the Citrus Research and Education Institute (CREI) and the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA).

Recommendation to develop the AIMS was made by the project's lead consultant, Dr. Mamoudou Setamou, after consultation with growers in the entire citrus industry. One of the main focus of the AIMS is to reduce the psyllid population through coordinated sprays. As an added benefit, the AIM's will provide an opportunity to holistically improve grove management and address other citrus pest issues  in addition to improving the citrus nutrition programme through simultaneous addition of foliar fertilizers and fungicides.

A  series of meetings will be held with growers to discuss the detail implementation of the Area-Wide Integrated System to be held in November 2012. Specifics such as coordination, spray dates, time and method to be used will also be discussed.

All citrus growers in Belize are asked to attend the meeting scheduled to take place in their area.
