The CREI germplasm collection is a citrus variety collection that is the source for healthy disease-free citrus material for the whole industry. It ensures that nursery owners, citrus farmers and the general public have access to the best quality disease-free citrus material (budwood, seeds and plants) of a wide- range of varieties. The collection currently holds 26 different varieties (of orange, grapefruit, lime, lemon, mandarin, kumquat, citron, citrange, pumello, sour orange, tangelo and tangor) and is frequently importing new ones to add to the collection. Although the majority of growers in Belize ask for Valencia orange and marsh brown grapefruit the other varieties are also available for members of the public who want a few trees for planting in their backyard, for small-scale growers who want to grow a wide range of varieties for the local market or for larger-scale commercial growers who wish to diversify their production.
Growers or members of the public who want a citrus variety that is not held in the CREI germplasm collection should ask CREI to arrange for it to be imported into Belize safely. By safely we mean without the risk of bringing in pests and diseases. CREI will find a save source for the variety you want. The varieties currently held in our variety collection have been imported from the National Clonal Germplasm Repository for Citrus and Dates, Riverside, California. Play it safe - do not risk introducing new citrus diseases into Belize - do not bring citrus fruit, seeds, budwood or cuttings from abroad into Belize - do not risk causing devastation to the Belize citrus industry - our economy depends on it! Ask CREI to bring in the variety for you. Remember ONE FRUIT OR ONE CUTTING could destroy an industry.
